Online bus ticketing platform BuuPass has raised $1.3 Million (KES 162.8 million) to expand its transport solutions in Kenya and Uganda.
The round came from FrontEnd Ventures, XA Network, Google Black Founders Fund and Renew Capital.
Others include Ajim Capital, Changecom, Adaverse, Gullit, Artha Ventures, Daba Finance, and several angel investors.
“The funding will enable us to invest in growth activities, increasing our market share in East Africa, with a focus on Kenya and Uganda. We will hire a team especially on the growth side, and technology experts so that we can build systems for scale because our plan is to become a pan-African infrastructure for long distance transportation,” BuuPass co-founder Sonia Kabra said to TechCrunch.
BuuPass was founded by Wycliffe Omondi and Sonia Kabara in 2016.
They met while studying at Earlham College, USA, under an undergraduate scholarship programme. Whereas Sonia studied Biochemistry, Omondi did a Bachelor of Arts in Economics.
The platform offers Bus Management Solution (BMS), a fleet management solution where bus operators can schedule their fleet, manage their operations and sell tickets, which completely replaces pen and paper ticketing.
The firm has developed ticketing solutions for Standard Gauge Railways (Madaraka Express) and several bus companies such as Easy Coach Limited and Modern Coast Express.
In November last year, it unveiled an online ticketing platform, allowing Ugandans to book bus and flight tickets.
It came after the firm a few months ago rolled out a Business-to-Business (B2B) solution for transport operators in the country.
The new solution will allow locals to book tickets online seamlessly and easily.
