Bolt Raises Fares by 10% to Address Driver Earnings Concerns

On demand mobility company Bolt has announced a 10% increase in base fares across all its ride categories, in a move the company said is aimed at providing fair compensation and enhancing working conditions for its driver-partners.

“This fare adjustment is not just a price change but also a step towards acknowledging the value our drivers bring to the platform every day. We believe that this move will help our drivers earn a fair wage, which in turn will allow them to continue providing the reliable and safe transportation our riders depend on,” Linda Ndung’u, General Manager said.

This means that all the base fare for the Economy category will now move from KShs. 200 to KShs. 220. Bolt added that it has been engaged in extensive dialogue with its driver community and industry regulator to better understand challenges as operational costs have risen significantly. The conversation followed months of complaints by drivers on ride hailing platforms that prevailing rates did not match their operational costs, thinning their margins to unsustainable lows.

“The company will continue to monitor the economic landscape and engage with all stakeholders to make any necessary adjustments in the future,” the company added in a statement.
