The largest twin-engine jet from Boeing, which is also the world’s largest, has recently made its maiden test flight, taking three hours and fifty one minutes from Washington to Seattle.
The 777X, which is set to start flying with Emirates airline in 2021, comes at a time when the plane maker is still trying to recover from losses incurred after the worldwide grounding of it 737 Max planes.
Some of the unique features of the 777X are:
- •Seating capacity of 426 on routes of 7,600 nautial miles
- •Maximum takeoff weight of 775,000 pounds
- •Carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer wing, with a wingspan of just over 233 feet
- •Folding wingtips that reduce its width by more than 20 feet so the plane can fit into various airport taxiways and gates
- •Engine type: General Electric GE9X
- •Engine fan diameter of 11 feet
Furthermore, the General Electric GE9X are the largest, most powerful engines ever mounted on a commercial airliner. Each of the two pieces provides 105,000 pounds of thrust, while reducing fuel burn by 10%.
Additionally, according to Boeing, the 777X will also be available in a smaller configuration, the 777-8X, which has a maximum seating capacity of 384.
