    BAT Appoints Rita Kavashe as Board Chair

    The Board of Directors of British American Tobacco (BAT) has appointed of Ms Rita Kavashe, MBS, as its new chairperson, with effect from 1st September 2020.

    Her appointment follows the retirement of Mr George Maina as a Director and consequently as the chairperson of the Board with effect from 31st August 2020, after serving for a cumulative period of nine years.

    Ms Kavashe is a non-executive director at the firm and is currently the managing director of Isuzu East Africa Limited.

    She is also a Non-Executive Director of Bamburi Cement Limited, the chair of the Kenya Roads Board (KRB), Vice-Chair of the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA). She serves as a member of the Kenya Vision 2030 Delivery Board.

    Ms Kavashe holds a master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Nairobi and a bachelor’s degree in Education from Moi University.

    BAT reported a half-year net profit of Ksh2.68 billion, attributing the performance to lower finance costs. The company recorded a 1.5% increase in profit before tax to Ksh 3.7 billion.
