Avocado Varieties that include Hass and Fuerta now face an indefinite and extended export ban imposed by the Kenya Agriculture and Food Authority(AFA).
The export ban, which was first instituted in November 15th 2021, seeks to prevent the exportation of immature fruit.
Exports of the Jumbo variety however continue but are capped by volume.
Avocado exporters must seek clearance from horticulture regulators
Kenya is considered the top exporter of this fruit in Africa with close competitors as Mexico and Peru who export their produce in June each year.
Now, Kenyan growers and exporters dealing in avocado export business have been banned from exporting without clearance with horticulture regulators.
According to Fresh Produce Consortium of Kenya CEO Okisegere Ojepat, the ban might be prolonged until early March to curb the export of immature fruits.
The move is aimed at curbing harvesting of immature crops following rampant cases of traders picking young crops previously to capitalize on high prices of the commodity on the world market.
