Kenya Revenue Authority is intensifying efforts to end illicit trade along the Kenya-Ethiopia border.
Smugglers have been taking advantage of the porous Ethiopian border in areas such as Sessi, Laga, Moyale and Forole to bring contraband goods into Kenya.
According to KRA’s Deputy Commissioner for Customs and Border Control, Samul Kamau, the border will conform to global standards.
Furthermore, Kamau says that authorities will conduct regular investigations in Moyale and Sololo sub-counties that border Ethiopia. A multi-sectoral approach is crucial to ambush dishonest merchants out to evade taxes.
Moreover, Kamau revealed collaborations with the Ethiopian government to ensure compliance among merchants.
Smuggling goods threatens national security, promotes entry of sub-standard products, and denies taxes to KRA.
