Tourism Boost as Australia Set to Reopen its Borders after 2 Years

Australia has announced plans to reopen its borders to vaccinated tourists with effect from 21st February 2022, ending a two-year-long pandemic travel restriction.

The country’s borders slammed shut in March 2020 in the hope of protecting the island continent against a surging global pandemic.

According to the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, every month of border closures has cost businesses an estimated $2.6 billion. Prior to the pandemic, the tourism industry generated over $84.9 billion in annual revenue and employed about 5% of the workforce.

Only a handful of countries now remain closed to tourists, including Japan, China, and New Zealand.
