Amazon plans to lease 12 Boeing 767 jets that have been converted to cargo from Air Transport Services Group (ATSG).
The lease brings the Amazon Air fleet to 82 cargo aircraft. The company says one of the leased jets already joined operations in May. The other 11 will be delivered in 2021.
In the same statement, Amazon announced plans to expand Amazon Air’s ground network. It is set to open regional air hubs at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Austin, Texas, and Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It will also open a new hub at the Lakeland Linder International Airport in Florida later this year and at the San Bernardino International Airport next year. This will be in addition to its central hub at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport also in 2021.
Amazon’s rising delivery network seeks to service its own business and potentially rival those of major carriers such as FedEx, United Parcel Service, and Deutsche Post DHL. FedEx has the largest air cargo fleet of the big three delivery companies, with more than 650 aircraft.
