Airtel Kenya plans to step into the home fiber market to satisfy the surge in demand for high-speed internet.
- •The telecommunications operator unveiled plans for a US$150 million data center at Tatu City, part of its broader push to strengthen its digital infrastructure.
- •At a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, Airtel executives emphasized that the facility will support both enterprise and residential connectivity.
- •Currently, Airtel’s home internet footprint relies on its Smartbox fixed wireless access device, which features indoor coverage enhancements and battery backup.
“Beyond capacity, our focus is on sustainability and resilience, enabling customers to fully leverage next-generation technologies in a secure environment,” said Yashnath Issur, CEO of Nxtra Data Centre at Airtel Africa.
The upcoming fiber rollout promises to offer urban households faster and more reliable connections suited to remote work, e-learning, and streaming services.
Airtel’s investments in network coverage and customer service infrastructure further reinforce its determination to glide away from the periphery of Kenya’s telco sector. The company has recorded marginal gains in market share over the past year.
The data center is expected to be completed by 2027.
