Africa-focused mobile network operator, Africell, has secured a mobile telecommunications operator’s licence in Angola, joining three other operators – Movicel, Unitel and Angola Telecom – already serving the country.

Africell is a holding company of telecommunications operations with its headquarters in London, United Kingdom. Its current portfolio spans across West, Central, and East Africa, namely Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, The Gambia, and Sierra Leone. It currently provides service to around 12 million subscribers.

In 2018, the company secured a $100 million loan from the U.S. Development Finance Corporation to fund an expansion strategy that included growing mobile payments and micro-finance offerings, alongside upgrading its 2G, 3G and 4G networks.

Africell said it planned to invest in infrastructure and services during the first phase of its rollout in Angola, with operations expected to create about 6,500 jobs over the next five years.
