The African Union (AU) and the European Union (EU) have signed a €20 million (~KSh 2.759 billion) financing agreement to “promote integrated development and capacity building across Africa.”
- •The programme will be implemented over two years and will focus on key development projects and strengthening institutional capabilities in various areas.
- •It will also be used to enhance the AU‘s processes, including its monitoring and evaluation mechanisms.
- •The program is complementary to the existing EU support under the AU-EU partnership that has been in place for more than two decades.
“The EU is by far the largest international partner to the AU and, through this programme, we will continue working not only with the AUC, but also with the different AU organs, such as AUDA-NEPAD and AfCFTA towards the key priorities of Agenda 2063,” Ambassador of the European Union to the African Union, Javier Niño Pérez said during the signing ceremony.
The signing took place in the margins of the information session for AU Member States on the “EU-Africa: Global Gateway Investment Package for Africa”, an event showcasing investments in Africa in the digital, energy, transport, health, education and research sectors and providing information on future opportunities provided by the EU Global Gateway.
The Package, which is being implemented through the EU, member states, and financial institutions, is aimed at supporting the continent through investments in green and digital transitions, job creation, health systems and education.
