African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $272 million loan for Tanzania. The funding is geared towards the construction of a new international airport in Dodoma.
The new airport in Msalato, 12 km from Dodoma and will take four years to complete. Once complete, it will henceforth be able to handle 1 million passengers annually.
AfDB reports that as of November 2019, its lending portfolio to Tanzania stood at $2.1 billion, with just over half of it going to transport projects.
Currently, Tanzania’s mainland (excluding Zanzibar) has 27 airports. The Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) operates all the airports except for Kilimanjaro International, which is managed by the state-owned Kilimanjaro Airport Development Company (KADCO).
Airports in the Zanzibar Archipelago are under the jurisdiction of the Zanzibar Airports Authority.
