Absa Bank Kenya appoints insider Moses Muthui as interim CFO

Absa Bank Kenya has appointed its head of strategy, Moses Muthui, as its new Chief Finance Officer (CFO) in an interim capacity, effective November 1, 2022.

Moses was appointed to replace Yusuf Omari, who stepped into the interim CEO position this month.

Before this appointment, he served as Absa Bank Kenya Chief Strategy Officer and Finance Director for the corporate and investment banking unit.

Interestingly, Moses Muthui is not your typical CFO since he has a wide skill set that cuts across Finance, Strategy, Treasury, investment banking and commercial operations. Moses has held various senior roles in Kenya and in the UK with Barclays Plc and in the US with Barclays Capital.

While at Barclays PLC, he worked on the restructuring of the Barclays Europe Business. At the same time, he also advised on $15 billion worth of deals on M&A, Equity Capital Markets and Debt Capital Markets at Barclays Capital.

In the last 5 years, he has helped design and lead execution towards the emergence of a new bank – Absa – into a business that is outperforming peers, a market leader in efficiency and returns.

Moses Muthui holds a senior Executive qualification from Havard Business School, a Masters’s Degree from the London School of Economics, a Masters’s in Business Administration from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics ad Mathematics from Egerton University. He is also a certified Public Accountant of Kenya, CPA (K) and a Chartered Certified Accountant of the United Kingdom ACCA (UK).
