Facebook Appoints Kenyan activist Maina Kiai to its Content Oversight Board

Facebook has appointed Kenyan activist, Maina Kiai, to its newly formed Global Oversight Board.

Aside from his appointment, Maina is also the Director of the Global Alliances and Partnerships at Human Rights Watch, and previously served as the head of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights and the Kenya Human Rights Commission.

Together with the other board members, he is now tasked with tackling complex and contentious debates about the types of content that should or should not be permitted on Facebook and Instagram, and who should decide.

Furthermore, their main areas of concern will focus on cases that will potentially impact many users, are of critical importance to public discourse, or those that raise questions about Facebook’s policies.

The board consists of 20 members in total, drawn from all over the world and representing diverse professional, cultural, political and religious backgrounds and viewpoints. Maina Kiai is part of the 3 Africans that have been selected to the board alongside Julie Owono from Cameroon, and Asare-Kyei from Senegal.

They will all serve for a maximum of three, 3-year terms.
