Naivas Supermarket, Kenya’s largest retailer, has opened a new outlet at Kiambu Mall, located in Kiambu town.
This is its 83rd outlet, and the 4th one opened so far since the year began, as Naivas steps up its expansion in the competitive retail sector.
The Kiambu outlet, covering more than 28,000 square feet of floor space, is the new anchor tenant at the Kiambu Mall. This space at Kiambu Mall was previously occupied by cash-strapped Botswana retailer Choppies Supermarket which bounced from the Kenyan market three years ago.
The retailer plans to also set up at Safari Centre along the Nakuru-Naivasha Highway but is yet to announce when it will open another branch in Meru.
These new branches will take Naivas Supermarket’s total outlets to 85, ahead of its closest rival, QuickMart.
Naivas has been on a campaign, which began on 25th March 2022, to provide relief to the shopper through these harsh economic times.
Willy Kimani, Naivas Chief Commercial Officer, said the chain had lessened the load on the shopping basket through sales promotions that ensure every Naivas shopper gets some relief at the till.
Naivas remains the largest retail chain in Kenya with 83 outlets, followed by QuickMart (50), Chandarana (24), Carrefour( 16), Cleanshelf( 12), Tuskys(3), Games Stores(3), Uchumi( 2).
Giant outlets that have recently shut down or exited the Kenyan market include Choppies, Shoprite, and Nakumatt.
The Kenyan retail sector continues to witness rapid developments and expansion activities by various retailers, which boosts the industry’s performance.
This intense expansion blitz is fueled by favourable demographics, infrastructure developments enhancing accessibility to retail stores, and stiff market competition among retailers for shoppers.
However, analysts maintain that e-commerce and the existing oversupply of floor space within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area, is expected to cool down the sector’s heated performance.
