Kenya’s inflation rate for July has risen to 6.44% compared to 6.32% in June 2021, on account of the rising cost of electricity, cooking gas, airtime and transport.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.20% from 115.110 in June 2021 to 115.337 in July 2021.
The month to month Food and Non-Alcoholic Drinks’ Index decreased by 0.46% between June 2021 and July 2021 due to declines in prices of some food items, which outweighed the increase in prices of others.
Inflation rises due to increasing prices of airtime, electricity, cooking gas and transport
The price of tomatoes, white bread and oranges fell by 4.12, 2.79 and 1.81%, respectively, in July. On the other hand, cooking oil prices (salad) and cabbages increased by 3.64% and 2.45%, respectively.
The Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels’ Index increased by 1.34% between June 2021 and July 2021 due to increased cooking gas prices, which went up by 15.43%.
Further, electricity prices went up by 0.76% and 1.06% for 200 Kilowatts and 50 Kilowatts, respectively.
The Information and Communication Index increased by 1.81 per cent, mainly due to an increase in the price of mobile phone airtime, which went up by 2.40% between June 2021 and July 2021.
