South Sudan’s first-ever locally-owned mobile telecom operator, Digitel Network, has launched operations in the country, aiming at fast-tracking connectivity of areas previously not served by foreign-owned telecom firms.
The country’s president, Salva Kiir Mayardiit, says the developments came as a result of government partnerships with the private sector. Furthermore, the government will explore options, including tax exemption that will benefit the importation of network equipment and other telecommunications tools.
The tax exemption will be done in collaboration with the country’s National Revenue Authority to ensure tax exemption modalities are consistent with the Authority’s mandate.
Digitel joins Kuwait’s Zain and South Africa’s MTN in the South Sudan telecom market. The government closed Lebanese Vivacell in 2016 over alleged unpaid arrears.
