New vehicle registrations in Kenya fell in 2020 mainly due to the effects of the pandemic on the economy. According to data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, the number of new vehicles registrations in the first 11 months of 2020 declined to 287,151 from 302,085 in the corresponding period in 2019, representing a 5 percent drop.
The new vehicle registrations included saloon cars, station wagons, vans, buses, pickups, minibuses, lorries, trailers, motorcycles, three wheelers, and wheeled tractors.
April 2020 recorded the lowest number of new vehicle registrations at 9,249, while October had the highest at 39,509. Motorcycle registrations formed a big part of the new vehicle registrations taking up 70 percent of all new registrations in 2020.
Only 762 new minibuses and 791 new buses were registered by the National Transport and Safety Authority in the first 11 months of 2020, compared to 1735 new minibuses and 1203 new buses registered in the same period in 2019.
