President Kenyatta nominated Immaculate Kassait for the Data Commissioner Position. Justin Bedan Muturi, the Speaker at the Kenya National Assembly, announced her nomination today.
“..I wish to report to the house that I have received a message from the President seeking National Assembly’s approval for the appointment of Miss Immaculate Kassait as the Data Commissioner in accordance to provisions of Section 6 (4) of the Data Protection Act 2019…” Muturi said.
The National Assembly departmental committee on communication, information and innovation will consider her appointment for the next 14 days before tabling its report to parliament for final approval.
If legislators approve her nomination, Immaculate Kassait will be Kenya’s first Data Commissioner, serving for a non-renewable tenure of 6 years. Kassait was one of the ten candidates shortlisted for the position, out of the wider pool of 126 applicants. The nine other applicants include John Walubengo, Thomas Odhiambo, David Gichoya, Brian Gichana, Anthony Okulo, Kennedy Okong’o, Marshid Mohamed, Mercy Wanjau, and Tobias Mbithi.

Immaculate previously served as the Director of Voter Education and Partnerships at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in 2019. She was also the Director of Voter Education for over nine years.
Kassait holds a Bachelor’s Degree in law from Makerere Univerity and a Masters in Business Administration from the United States International University Africa (USIU).
