The Kenya Nuclear Agency is on track to build a $5 billion nuclear power station by 2027 according to an article by Bloomberg published on the Engineering News website.
Kenya plans to increase its electricity generation capacity in order to support the growing manufacturing sector. The country expects demand for electricity to increase to 22000 megawatts by 2031 largely driven by industrial expansion.
“The nuclear agency is assessing technologies ‘to identify the ideal reactor for the country,'” notes the article, quoting a report by the Kenya Nuclear Power and Energy Agency.
After evaluating three regions, a site in Tana River County has been picked for the construction of the Nuclear Power Plant.
“The plant will be developed with a concessionaire under a build, operate and transfer model,” Bloomberg reports.
