Israeli Ambassador, Oded Joseph, has revealed that plans are underway to revive the stalled Galana-Kulalu irrigation project, in a move that seeks to bring President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four Agenda on food security, into fruition.
Idealized in August 2014, the National Irrigation Board (NIB) signed a KSh14.5 billion contract with Israeli firm, Green Arava Limited, to start irrigated maize farming in the Galana-Kulalu scheme in Kilifi and Tana River counties.
However, the project has so far been marred with corruption allegations, with only 5,000 acres out of the targeted one million being put under cultivation by March 2018. This is despite the fact that over KSh6 billion has already been used.
Therefore, the Ambassador now says that moving forward, they will create two other support centers for farmers, alongside model farms offering expertise to farmers in five or seven years using Israeli technology.
Currently, the Galana-Kulalu project stands at 85% complete.
