KQ staff can have a temporary relief after High Court quashed their laying off in a restructuring plan.
KQ argues that the restructuring plan would reduce costs and ease losses.
However, High Court judge Hellen Waswilwa put a stop to the process pending determination of a dispute in the Employment and labour court on February 26. Moreover, Wasilwa says that the planned redundancies violate the Employment Act and the Fair Administration Act.
The Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) lodged a petition last Thursday requesting for a stop in the implemenation of letters dated January 24, 2020.
KAWU on their end say that KQ failed to give any notice of redundancy of any employees thus is in violation of the law.
Allan Kivaluka, acting KQ CEO, said in the letter that the layoffs and restructuring would return KQ to profitability. He, however, vowed to follow the law while engaging the stakeholders to ensure a humane layoff process.
