The Port of Mombasa container handling section bet its set target of 1.35 million TEUs (Total Equivalent Units) for 2019, closing the year at a capacity of 1.4 million TEUs.
Kenya Ports Authority attributes the high performance to the following factors:
- Quick evacuation of cargo by the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR)
- Dedicated workforce
- Better managerial systems
- Unprecedented growth in both transit and transhipment business
- Stable work relations with stakeholders
In 2018, the facility only managed a total of 1.304 million TEUs. Therefore, there was an increase of 97,000 TEUs, translating to a 7.3% increase.
As reported by Xinhua, cargo throughput at the inland container terminal in Nairobi was 415,650 TEUs, up from 257,972 TEUs in 2018. This, thus, signifies a 61.1% growth.
In 2020, the port expects to handle a total of 1.5 million TEUs.
The Port of Mombasa is the key entry and exit point for cargo belonging to a vast hinterland that includes Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, South Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia.
