Kenya Airways has advised passengers set to fly from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport from 11am not to go to the airport following strike by aviation staff.
The staff under the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) are protesting the proposed takeover of the airport by Kenya Airways, management issues within the airport and unfair staff hiring and compensation.
The workers say the planned takeover of JKIA, which is under review by Parliament will leave most of them jobless.
Flights have reportedly not taken off since 3 am, a sign that the air transport industry is in crisis.
KAWU had issued the strike notice on 27th February but KAA said on Tuesday it had been suspended following the issuance of an order of injunction by the Employment and Labour Relations court on 5th March.
Update:
Kenya Airways has issued a statement stating that its stakeholders are working to resolve the operations following the “illegal” strike which it confirmed had disrupted the normal flight operations.
The airline has further said that all passengers whose flight(scheduled for 6th March) has been disrupted can rebook or reroute the flights at no cost.
“We invite all guests to check on the Kenya Airways official social media platforms for regular updates on their flights. The airline offers guests who booked on KQ flights today 6th March 2019 who would like to re book or reroute their flights that this will be done at no cost,” the statement stated.
