Sterling and Wilson, an Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) solution provider based in India, will build the biggest battery storage and single battery installation plant in Africa with the aim of supporting the education sector on the continent.
According to Sterling and Wilson, the project will power behind-the-meter clients in the education sector in Western Africa with 30MWh of battery energy storage distributed across three sites including a 17MWh single battery installation.
Deepak Thakur, chief executive hybrid and energy storage at Sterling and Wilson said: “Lack of power supply is a primary barrier in impacting effective learning and development of any nation. We are extremely glad to have bagged our landmark first project in the, which will not only consist of the largest battery installation in Africa but will also prove to be a shelter in installation empowering future generations.”
“We are confident in meeting the [sternest] quality, safety and financial needs of our client given our combined global expertise of having delivered over 7GW of solar, diesel and gas-based power plants on a turnkey basis to date,” he added.
The firm has, however, not said where the project will be located.
The Project
The battery energy storage project is Sterling and Wilson’s “first large-scale hybrid and energy storage turnkey EPC contract.”
The company will be responsible for design, EPC, operations, and maintenance of a captive hybrid micro-powered by battery storage, solar, and diesel. The micro-grid backed up with batteries will supply one-day power to schools ensuring that they run efficiently.
In addition, the firm is seeking such projects in the Middle East, Asia, Europe, the US, and Australia.
