World Kaihatsu Kogyo Company Ltd has finalised the first phase of constructing a dual carriageway on Ngong Road after an 8-months delay. The delay was caused by difficulties in shifting power and water lines.
The project, which kick-started in August 2016, involved a 2.5 kilometre stretch between Kenya National Library and Prestige Plaza. The project cost Sh1.3 billion.
The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) said the construction of the dual carriageway will create a median for the integration of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) or light railway.
“[The project] will also include the installation of street lights, intelligent traffic signals, and pedestrian walkways,” KURA stated.
The expansion project of Ngong Road will take place in three phases. The second phase will run from Prestige Plaza to Dagoretti Corner while the third phase will pick up from Dagoretti Corner to Karen Shopping Centre.
The project is being funded via a grant by Japan under its Economic Co-operation Programme Project and is being overseen by Katahira and Engineers International, a Tokyo-based firm. The third phase of the project that is 9.8 kilometres long is being fully-funded by the Kenyan government.
In July 2017, the Kenyan government awarded China Qinjian International Group Sh2 billion tender to construct phase three of the project.
