Kenya has finally unveiled the Mombasa-Nairobi SGR, the country’s biggest infrastructure project in the country since independence. It will shorten the passenger travel time from Mombasa to Nairobi from more than ten hours to under five hours. Freight trains will complete the journey in less than eight hours.
This week, the first cargo train was flagged off by Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta while the passenger coach dubbed ‘Madaraka Express’ was unveiled on the same day at Port Reitz at the coastal town of Mombasa.
Construction of the 472 kilometres line from the port city of Mombasa to the capital city of Nairobi took two and half years at a cost of approximately Sh327 billion, 90% funded by the Exim Bank of China. China Road and Bridge Corporation was contracted to build the project.
The line is powered by diesel trains with an average speed of 120km/h.
