Hospitality and retail service providers can now receive tips from customers through digital payments transacted through Pesapal, according to a statement by the fintech company on Tuesday 16th Jan.
- The online payment platform announced that customers can tip their service providers on Pesapal Sabi Smart POS machines.
- The feature comes with preset percentages but they can also indicate the exact tip amount.
- According to a report by McKinsey Global Payment Map, digital transactions on the continent will soar to around $40 billion by 2025.
The money will then be billed on the total payment and accessed by the service provider to their preferred wallet.
Although tipping is not a customary activity in Kenya, some customers still tip service providers by asking them to ‘keep change’ or by directly handing them physical cash.
“With this new feature, we are providing a convenient way for customers to show their appreciation for good service,” Pesapal Technical Director Fred Mwangima said.
After the COVID-19 pandemic, many Kenyans preferred to keep their money in e-wallets such as M-pesa and other mobile banking services.
“We are responding to the current dynamics of the payment landscape that has seen a surge in digital payment,” said Pesapal CEO Agosto Liko.
