Volvo Group, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of trucks, buses, construction equipment, marine and industrial engines has opened a regional office in Nairobi with plans to set up an assembly plant in Mombasa and invest Sh 2.5 Billion into the new venture.
As part of its African expansion program, the Swedish automaker said the Mombasa plant will produce trucks to serve a number of countries in the East African region. The plant will be officially unveiled by March 2018 with a production target of 500 trucks each year to 2000 in a few years.
The plant will be established in partnership with its local distributor, NECST Motors.
In Africa, Volvo Group currently operates assembly plants in South Africa, Tunisia and Morocco producing a number of brands including the company’s 20 year flagship brand the “FH” which accounts for more than 60% of Volvo Trucks’ total sales.
Volvo now becomes the fourth automaker to announce plans to set up in Kenya in 2017 alone. Others that have announced the same include; Peugeot, Iveco and Ashok Leyland.
