Around 50,000 South African banks’ employees are set to demonstrate on Friday over retrenchment that has been ongoing in the banking sector in recent times.
The planned strike will make it difficult for banks’ customers to transact on Friday.
According to the South African Bank Staff Association(SABSA) official Joe Kokela, the protest had been planned since June and the union will not change its mind. He insisted that they no longer trust what banks say or do to the Sabsa members.
It’s estimated that 45,000 to 50,000 workers will join the protest.
South African banks have performed numerous job cuts over the years in what they term as restructuring.
Standard Bank has this year closed some branches, affecting 1,200 jobs. Absa Bank has also issued a warning that hundreds of its staff may lose their jobs as the bank is planning on restructuring.
