300 jobs at risk as StanChart moves its regional service centre from Nairobi to India

    Crisis in the City:

Standard Chartered Bank has confirmed that it will relocate its regional service center from Nairobi to Chennai, India where its Global Shared Services Centre are located.

But the move will see about 300 roles in Nairobi switched to the bank’s existing service centres in India, Malaysia and China. The Bank’s regional Managing Director Lamin Manjang said the staff who will be impacted by the decision will be absorbed into other areas within the Bank. However, a redundancy exercise will be carried for those that will not be redeployed.

Mr Manjang also noted that the decision to relocate the bank’s regional Service Centre from Nairobi was reached at the group level and was aimed at centralizing all Shared Service Centre operations globally into the above three Global Centres.

Currently, the Nairobi office serves as the Bank’s regional service centre for Botswana, Zambia, Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa and Kenya.

“Standard Chartered Bank’s commitment to Africa and Kenya in particular remains very strong. The Group has made substantial investments in Africa in the last year, and Africa is now at the front of the queue for future investments,” said Lamin.
