The NSE 2019 Investment Challenge Awards ceremony was officiated by Dr Patrick Njoroge, Governor, Central Bank of Kenya.
This challenge is an annual youth-focused online competition that simulates trading of securities listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.
Each participating individual or team receives Sh 3 million virtual investment capital to buy and sell shares and bonds listed at the bourse.
They are to use live data from the NSE Automated Trading System. The participating teams are thereafter evaluated by selected stockbrokers and investment advisors, based on their portfolio returns.
Samson Kibirah a student at the Kenya School of Revenue Administration and Jacob Wafula from Machakos University were the first and second runners up with portfolio returns of KSh. 3,202,655 and KSh 3,487,572 respectively.
Collins Kiprono Koech, a local entrepreneur, was the winner of the non-student category with a portfolio return of KSh 3,571,475. James Ngwera and Stanley Sewe were the first and second runners up of the non-student category with portfolio returns of KSh. 3,469,694 and KSh 3,076,207 respectively.
Mr. Geoffrey Odundo, NSE Chief Executive noted,” The NSE is keen and focused on enhancing financial literacy amongst the youth in Kenya as we seek to mould a new crop of future investors.”
Since its inception, the NSE Investment challenge has directly attracted over 100,000 students and trained thousands through the annual university and technical institutions tours.
Dr. Patrick Njoroge, Governor, Central Bank of Kenya said the NSE Investment Challenge inspires confidence in investment among the youth. “Initiatives such as the NSE Investment Challenge are key in supporting personal growth and development among the youth. I urge all the youth to take advantage of such platforms to improve their livelihoods.”
