The first phase of of Tanzania’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro is set to begin operations at the end of this month.
The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) says the whole project is almost complete with the construction of the Morogoro-Dodoma stretch having reached 82.2% and set for completion by December 2022.
TRC says the first phase’s operations are expected to use electric trains.
TRC Director-General Masanja Kadogosa says the government of Tanzania has so far released $261 million out of the total of $1.9 billion for the construction of the 368 kilometre project.
In January this year, Tanzania and Burundi signed a deal to build a 282 kilometre Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Uvinza in Tanzania’s Kigoma region to Gitega in Burundi. 156 km of the SGR will be built in Tanzania and 126 km will be built in Burundi.
Both countries already started seeking finance for the implementation of the project, which is estimated to cost less than $900 million.
The SGR project is intended to link the Dar es Salaam port to landlocked neighbouring countries of Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
