The Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority has gazetted the 2026 register of licensed and authorised Saccos, confirming 176 institutions approved to undertake deposit-taking business from 1 January to 31 December 2026.
- •Five Saccos were placed on conditionally restricted, credit-only status, barring them from taking new deposits, while two institutions exited the regulated perimeter, one through a voluntary merger and another by failing to renew its authorisation.
- •Overall, SASRA has kept the regulated footprint stable at 176 deposit-takers, signalling continuity in a tightly supervised sector, with annual licence renewals, automatic revocations for non-compliance, and a clear distinction between deposit-taking, non-deposit-taking, and conditionally restricted operators.
- •There are broadly two categories of SACCOs in Kenya: deposit-taking and non-withdrawable deposit taking, but there are also other broad categories such as by community-based, occupation-based, Microfinance, and national sacks.
