Jambojet, a low-cost brand of Kenya Airways, has announced plans to purchase four aircraft to facilitate its expansions locally and regionally.
Jambojet’s CEO, Willem Hondius said that two used Bombardier Q400 aircraft will be delivered in June and two other new ones in 2019. The CEO said this during Jambojet’s maiden international flight to Entebbe on February 15.
Additionally, he said the Kenyan government has already made applications for Jambojet to receive the rights to fly to Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, Ethiopia, Congo, and Tanzania.
“The applications were made in October last year and we are hopeful that by the end of the year we shall have started flights to at least two of these countries,” he stated.
“To expand, we need to increase our capacity. We shall, therefore, get four more aircraft by early next year, increasing our fleet size to eight.”
Hondius further explained that the carrier is currently looking into two funding options because it does not have the bandwith to purchase them in cash.
This news comes about two years after Jambojet’s request to fly to 16 routes like Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, Kigali, Kilimanjaro, Juba, Addis Ababa, Entebbe, Mwanza, and Bujumbura was approved.
